SUMMARY
The purpose of this job is to create a safe, caring, joy-filled environment for our adults with special needs (“Citizens”) as they engage in meaningful, fulfilling work. The Job Supervisor is responsible for running a workroom and setting an excellent example of work ethic to both volunteers and Citizens.
I. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
II. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Citizen Supervisor is responsible for the overall supervision of the Citizens in their care each day. This individual will also be responsible for any volunteers assigned to their work room each day. The candidate will carry out all responsibilities in accordance with BIG-Lowcountry’s policies and procedures and adhering to our Core Values.
III. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. A. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE - Prefer undergraduate degree in psychology, sociology, human services, or special education with at least 1 year experience working with adults with special needs. Previous experience is desirable but not required.
B. SKILLS AND ABILITIES – Candidates should possess personal characteristics such as patience, tolerance, and a willingness to adapt expectations and learn more about specific disabilities. Candidates must have a strong sense of serving and caring for the needs of adults with functional disabilities in their care
C. LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, interpret, and communicate documents such as safety procedures, operating and maintenance instructions, and policy and procedure manuals. Ability to write comprehensive reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively and motivate employees at all levels in the Community. Experience with sign language a strong plus.
D. Reasoning Ability – Candidates should have the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of individual behavioral issues while maintaining control of a group setting.
E. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations – First consideration given to those with CPR and first aid. Incumbents must possess a minimum of a valid driver’s license from the State of South Carolina.
IV. PHYSICAL DEMANDS – The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, an employee is frequently required to communicate by listening or writing. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; stoop; kneel; bend; crouch; crawl; and climb stairs. The employee may occasionally be required to lift and/or transfer a Citizen to and from a wheelchair.
V. WORK ENVIRONMENT – This position requires a flexible individual, someone able to multi-task and adjust to the many variables found between assignments. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
While performing the duties of this job, the candidate may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to chemicals, paints, extreme cold and extreme heat.
VI. HOURS AND SALARY – The PT Job Supervisor will work approximately 24 hours/week: 12:30 – 5:30pm, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and four flexible hours midweek. Wednesday is our Citizens’ day off, and is used to prepare for the upcoming week, research new enterprise possibilities, and complete any remaining tasks necessary to ensure successful programming. Our community will be closed 4.5 weeks each year. Estimated start date is September 9th, 2024.
Salary: PT Job Supervisor’s starting salary is $20-25/hour, commensurate with education and years of experience.

Our adults with special needs, who call themselves "Citizens", create unique, marketable items that help sustain the vocational community they enjoy. We sell the beautiful (and delicious!) products our Citizens make at pop-up shops around the Lowcountry. We currently meet with our Citizens twice per week, but will open our 4 day program on September 9th, 2024.
