About:
The mission of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church is to reach the church’s vision through celebrating God in worship, connecting the body through fellowship, developing followers of Christ through discipleship, serving the body through ministry, and sharing Christ through outreach and evangelism. Mt. Zion United Methodist is a 440-member church with 160 in average attendance at two services. The 8:00 am service is a more traditional service and the 10:30 service is a more contemporary service. Music is very important to us and we have a music director as well as an adult choir for the 8:00 service, a praise band for the 10:30 service, and a youth band made up of youth and young adults from our church. We offer Sunday School for all ages and stages and a children’s church during the 10:30 service. The church is located in an area that is within 15 miles of Annapolis, 30 miles of Baltimore, and 25 miles of Washington, D.C. The area right around the church contains farmland on one side and some of the busiest intersections in the area on the other. There are also several housing developments within the immediate vicinity. The church is located in the southern part of Anne Arundel County in an area commonly referred to as South County. The population of Anne Arundel County is approximately 525,000 people. Thousands of people move to the county each year, with the vast majority being upwardly-mobile families with teen-age children, college-age children and families whose children have started their own lives. What some would describe as a small, rural church that has long been part of the landscape, others would describe as a church in the heart of the greater suburban areas between Baltimore, Annapolis and Washington, D.C. Some of the missions we offer include participation in the Appalachian Service Project (ASP), a motorcycle riders ministry, freezer meals for anyone who needs a boost, and meat provided to assist people who come to the church for assistance. We have a Pastor’s Discretionary Fund (PDF) out of which we have assisted people with a wide variety of financial needs. The church has coordinated food drops to area housing developments where there is need, a breakfast club for kids in the summer who would normally depend on the school for breakfast, tutoring at local schools, a growing middle-high youth group that is reaching un-churched kids, and a growing soccer and drama camp format for the Vacation Bible School. A more recent endeavor is a ministry to serve the servers – the church is taking special meals and treats to the local firefighters, police officers and teachers during their work hours to minister to them and build relationships.
